1939-40 Season - Epsom Town FC
|
Not many people know that Epsom Town FC were a completely new team for 1939/40 and were elected to the Surrey Senior League.
When Epsom F.C. chose to shut down following the declaration of war, our Chairman Charles Pettett threw in his lot with Epsom Town, declaring that the cinemas stay open, so why couldn't the football do the same!
He wanted to keep morale up in the town and the Epsom Town club ran continuously throughout the war years until the reclamation of West Street by the parent club led "the Town" into a one year exile followed by the club's inevitable demise.
Here is their story.
|
This is the first ever match programme produced by the newly formed Epsom Town F.C. for their Surrey Senior League match with Godalming F.C. on Saturday 2nd September.
Epsom Town won this match at West Street by two goals to one, but the declaration of World War Two twenty-four hours later ensured that it would be the only Surrey Senior League match they would ever play!
