23rd February 2015
Welcome to the latest Club update.
The weather relented and we were able to play just our second match simce mid-January as we hosted Hartley Wintney.
The game followed a similar pattern to last year's League match at High Road where we had a slow start and were second best for the first half, trailing as we went in, but improved notably in the second and turned things around. By the end we were completely on top and begs the question, were we poor in the first half, or just picking up after a bit of time off?
We should find out the answer to that question tomorrow as we face Camberley Town in the Quarter-Final of the League Cup at High Road (7.30 start). If we start like we did on Saturday, or indeed against the Krooners a couple of weeks back, we will be saying goodbye to the competition in a hurry. However, if we can play like we did in the second half against Hartley, and indeed Camberley too, then we can get past the League leaders into the Semi-Finals for only the second time in recent history.
This is of course the main issue with a team in the middle of the table. Inconsistency. We can compete with the top teams and have given them all, (except Windsor when we were badly short and had new players thrown in at the deep end) a good game. However, we are not quite there yet and I feel that our chances of a top five finish look very unlikely. Personally, I would be using Spelthorne Sports as my target. They sit in sixth place but we did the double over them and with the fixtures that we face, I believe we can close the gap on them. If we do, I feel it would be a satisfactory end to the season.
And what a strange one it's been so far, especially in view of the fixtures. We have not met a team outside of the top ten in the League since Bedfont Sports on 8th November; that was eleven games ago! Additionally we have faced both Camberkey and Molesey in the Surrey Senior Cup, and three of our next four matches are against Camberley, Molesey and Cove, arguably the best three in the League! If we can take something from that little cluster of fixtures now that we are up to almost full strength and are suspension free, then we could see a very good end to the season.
So come on down tomorrow as we play Camberley (again). Your club needs your support!
There's also the opportunity of a £282 jackpot from the Salts Super Six Predictor Competition. This is now the HIGHEST cash prize that the club have offered in recent memory, and possibly ever, as it has now exceeded the £250 top prize offered by the Golden Goal Bingo cards back in 2010/11. As they say in another well known money maker, it could be you!
Come on you Salts!
