Welcome to the latest Club update.
Two matches remain in our season after home defeats to Spelthorne on penalties in the Southern Combination Cup and to Hanworth Villa in the League.
Worryingly, we still haven't confirmed our third place finish and with in form Westfield and Cove only a point or two behind us, our match at Raynes Park on Tuesday looms large if we are to avoid going to Westfield on Saturday with our Vase exemption in the balance.
To explain, a top four finish entitles us to a place in the First Round Proper of the F.A. Vase. This has a couple of benefits. 1) You only have to win three games to get a National draw and a big exemption to the Second Round in the followingseason, and 2) You get the opportunity to get a couple of League fixtures played earlier in the season. Realistically this is the greater of the benefits, especially if we are to mount a challenge for the title next season.
To achieve this, quite simply, if we beat Raynes Park Vale on Tuesday, OR win or draw with Westfield on Saturday, we will be fine, so it is all in our hands still. However, Cove play their last game at home to Wembley on Tuesday which I expect them to win and they are two points behind us with a similar goal difference, so if we slip up at Raynes Park, then we will drop to fourth and a loss to Westfield would see us miss out altogether. A scary thought!
Off the field I have heard some positive noises about our long term future, of which I obviously cannot say any more at this stage. Suffice to say it is always better to hear good news on that front instead of no news and hopefully more will be forthcoming at the A.G.M. which will probably be in late June or early July.
So as our twenty-first season away from West Street concludes next Saturday, it is important to note that there is still hope, both on and off the field, and we'll know more about the former, this time next week.
Come on you Salts!
