Monday 21st October 2013 -
The two previous editorials (which are still available in the Previous Articles Index) have concentrated on the background to our club, so now it's time to look a little more at the present position.
A quick glance at the League table tells you that we are top of the table again, following Saturday's 3-0 home win over Frimley Green. We had a flying start to the season, and although Whyteleafe curtailed our interests in both national competitions this season, we opened up with eight straight League wins. Since that time, results have dipped slightly from the high standard that had been set at the start, but the last two performances tell me that things are picking up again.
Those two recent games were at home against Raynes Park Vale and Frimley Green, and whilst a late equaliser from Vale stopped us taking maximum points from these matches we are beginning to show signs that we are getting back into form, and once we got ahead against Frimley Green, we played some very nice stuff at times.
So we are top. Who are our main challengers? Well, at the start of the season I just used the very simple equation that the top five from last year were a bit better than the other teams, so with Egham Town and Guernsey being promoted and no clubs being relegated into our division, I thought ourselves, South Park and Cove would be the ones to watch, although felt that you couldn't discount the well-supported Windsor team. That has proven to be fairly close to the mark, with only Cove struggling to recapture last season's form, while Hanworth Villa are again a threat after suffering a bit of a blip last term.
There is also the vastly improved Hartley Wintney, who finished very strongly last season and have presently dropped less points than anyone else and remain in both Cup and Vase. If I'm honest though, it's South Park who most concern me right now. But the beauty of this league on any given day, any team can beat any of the others, so there remain plenty of twists and turns in what could prove to be the most interesting battle for years. All we can do to quote the old footballing cliché is to take things one game at a time.
Our next League match is nearly two weeks away and is a difficult one at Hanworth Villa. In the meantime we have two Cup matches to take our minds off things a little as we face Step Four opposition in both. Southern Leaguers Chertsey visit us tomorrow in the Surrey Senior Cup, while our landlords Chipstead visit us in the Southern Combination Cup next Tuesday. In between those games we have a Saturday off, courtesy of Hartley Wintney's FA Cup match with Daventry Town.
And following all of those, we face a midweek trip to South Park in the League Cup; a rematch of last year's final, which of course, we won 3-0.
These are exciting times on the field for the club. Come along and see for yourself.
